Topic: Colour, Shape and Patterns

2nd _ 20th Nov 2020

At Samuels: we will... encourage independence and initiative in choosing activities. We will share lots of activities using colours, shapes and patterns. We will have special colour, shape and pattern weeks.

Week 1 (2nd – 6th Nov) Colours: Week 2 (9th-13th Nov) Shapes: Week 3 (16th –20th Nov) Patterns:

During colour week we will be busy mixing colours and painting with natural objects. We will enjoy listening to stories such as Maisie’s Dream and Jazzy in the Jungle.

In shape week we will look at a different shape each day. We will play matching and sorting activities and games, make models from junk, practice our scissor skills and enjoy listening to a variety of musical instruments.

Our home corner will be transformed into a busy café during pattern week. Your child will have the opportunity to explore the different roles of customer/waiters/chef and we will enjoy listening to and acting out the story The Tiger who came to Tea. We will make collages with spots and stripes and will have mark making activities that focus on horizontal and vertical lines.

Ideas for home: you can.... .... look for shapes (especially square, circle, triangle and rectangle) with your child around the home and outside. Count the corners and sides of different shaped objects, comparing and measuring them for fun! Talk about your favourite colours. Perhaps your child would like to wear a favourite colour to nursery or stripes/spots during our pattern’s week?

Please could we request that you encourage your child to practise putting on and taking off his/her coat, hat, gloves and shoes? Please remember to send your child with a named warm outside coat, hat, scarf and gloves as the weather gets colder; also, a warm sweatshirt or jumper as we still need to keep the nursery room well ventilated all through the winter months during the pandemic.

December Newsletter

Topic: Families & Christmas

23rd November – 20th December 2020

At Samuels: we will... be encouraging the children to think about their immediate and extended families. The home corner will be very busy as the children dress up, pretend play and imitate every-day actions and events from their own family and cultural backgrounds. We will remember that we all start life as babies and celebrate the things that the children can do now, that they could not do when they were younger. We would also welcome a small photograph of your family (by email please) that we can place in your child’s All About Me book. We will be very busy making gifts and cards for our families. During the last two weeks of term our home corner will become a nativity role play area and we will enjoy dressing up and acting out the Christmas Story. At the end of each afternoon session we will light an advent candle to welcome the coming Christmas season. We will enjoy stories about families and Christmas. Unfortunately, we will not be able to send each other Christmas cards via our Samuels Post Box this year and our Christmas celebrations will need to be a little different. We are unable to hold our usual Nativity Play but please be assured that we are doing everything possible to ensure your child has a rich Christmas experience with us at Samuels. We are intending to set up a ‘Winter Wonderland’ experience for the children to enjoy in their key worker groups.

Ideas for home: you can talk about your family and your family values, show your child some baby photographs of themselves and other members of your family; share stories of what he/she was like as a baby; and talk about what the Christmas season means for you as a family.

A couple of reminders:

· Please remember to let us know if your child will not be in nursery for any reason.
